The Peace Test: How to Know If Your Business Is Actually Working For You

There's a version of success that looks exactly right from the outside and feels completely wrong on the inside.


Revenue is coming in. Clients are saying yes. Your calendar is full. By every conventional metric, the business is working. And yet, somewhere underneath the momentum, there's a quiet hum of dread you can't quite name — a sense that you're running a race you didn't actually sign up for.


This is one of the most common things I see in the entrepreneurs I work with, and it's one of the least talked about. Because how do you explain that success feels bad? How do you say out loud that you built the thing you wanted and it's still not right?


You say it by being honest about what "working" actually means.


I've built my entire practice around a single belief: a business that costs you your peace isn't a success. That's not a soft idea — it's a standard. And like any standard, it requires a way to measure against it.


This is the Peace Test. Ten questions that cut through the noise of metrics and milestones and ask the only question that ultimately matters: is this business actually working for you?

Take the Test

Read each question slowly. Don't answer with what you think you should feel. Answer with what's actually true.


1. When you think about tomorrow's workload, what's your first feeling?

Not your second feeling — the one you talk yourself into. The first one, before the discipline kicks in. If it's consistently dread, low-grade anxiety, or exhaustion, that's information. A business that's working for you should produce, at least sometimes, a sense of anticipation.


2. Are you doing work that only you can do — or work that anyone could do?

The higher you climb in your business, the more your time should be spent on things that genuinely require you: your relationships, your thinking, your vision, your expertise. If you're regularly doing tasks that a capable contractor or a solid system could handle, you're not running your business. You're buried in it.


3. Do you have a real end to your workday?

Not a theoretical one. An actual one. A time when the laptop closes, the notifications stop, and you are genuinely off. If work follows you into every evening and weekend not because of a temporary crunch but as a permanent state, your business doesn't have boundaries. It has you.


4. When a new client reaches out, is your first instinct excitement — or calculation?

By "calculation" I mean the mental math of: can I fit this in, can I manage this person, do I have the bandwidth, what happens if this goes wrong? Some of that thinking is healthy. But if it's consistently the first thing — if every new opportunity feels like another weight rather than another win — something in the model needs to change.


5. Could your business survive two weeks without you?

Not thrive — survive. If the answer is no, you haven't built a business. You've built a job that happens to have your name on it. A functioning business has systems, documentation, and a structure that can hold things together when the CEO is unavailable. If yours can't, that's not a personal failing — it's a gap with a solution. But it needs to be named.


6. Do you know your numbers — and do they tell a story you understand?

Not just revenue. The full picture: profit margins, client acquisition cost, average project timeline, team capacity, recurring versus one-time income. If your financial picture is a blur, you're making decisions without full information. Peace, in business, requires knowing what you're actually dealing with — not hoping things add up at the end of the month.


7. Are your best clients energizing or depleting?

Your best clients — the ones you'd clone if you could — how do you feel after a call with them? If the answer is energized, challenged, useful: your business is attracting the right people. If even your best clients leave you feeling drained and resentful, the problem isn't the clients. It's the offer, the positioning, or the boundaries — and all of those are fixable.


8. Are you proud of how your business runs, or embarrassed by it?

This one stings a little, which is why it matters. When you imagine a potential client seeing behind the scenes — your onboarding process, your communication, your systems, your follow-through — do you feel confident or do you wince? A business you're proud of from the inside out is a business you'll promote without hesitation. One you're quietly embarrassed by will always be held at arm's length.


9. What has your business cost you that wasn't on the invoice?

Relationships. Sleep. Health. Hobbies. The things you kept saying you'd get back to once things settled down. Take an honest inventory. Some cost is normal — building anything requires sacrifice. But if the list is long and growing, and the settling down never seems to arrive, that's worth sitting with.


10. If nothing changed about your business in the next three years, how would you feel?

Not what would you do — how would you feel? Relief? Contentment? Or quietly trapped? Your answer to this question tells you almost everything about whether the life your business is building is actually the one you want.

There's no score here. This isn't a quiz with a result at the end. It's an honest conversation with yourself — and the answers don't require a dramatic response.


If most of your answers felt clear and grounded, you're in good shape. Keep building.

If several of them produced a knot in your stomach, welcome to the work. Not because something is broken beyond repair, but because you've just identified where the gaps are. And gaps, unlike vague discomfort, can be addressed.


The businesses I love working in are the ones where the operator can answer most of these questions with confidence — not because everything is perfect, but because there's structure, intention, and a clear sense of what the business is for.


That kind of business is buildable. For almost anyone, at almost any stage.

But it starts with being honest about whether what you have right now is actually what you built it to be.


Peace isn't the absence of hard work. It's the presence of a business that works for your life — not instead of it.
